I'm not sure that it's the technology itsself, but the "numb stance of the technological idiot" (to use a phrase from class).  It can make people's lives easier and help us feel more connected, or it can lead to an increase in social fragmentation.  I think that the problem you're writing about here is that technology in America is coupled with materialism and greed.
