Yuck! Nationalism is bad, pagan at its root. Natural Law attempts to uncover human nature as it is, and to allow the best rules for coexisting to emerge spontaneously.

This poem is great.

Anyone know a good church in the DC Fairfax area?

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

Pragmatism and utilitarianism OCCASIONALLY intersects with Christian faith, but as jurisnationalist mentions, not nearly enough to marry them together.

This poem is a frightening stark look at the baseline foundation of a consumerism-based utilitarian gospel. No thank you.

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

I have been trying to convince street=corner preachers and youth-group leaders that consequentialist arguments in favor of the Christian life are entirely out of place. We don't believe in Jesus because He promises a perfect healthy life. We don't abstain from fornication because we might get pregnant or get an STD. We don't abstain from drugs because we could get addicted or hurt our bodies. We don't give to the poor in order to be blessed by God.
We practice the Christian ethic in response to the One who called us. We live the peculiar life because He gave His life for us. Brethren, we are not utilitarians!

Nathanael Snow

ndsnow@gmail.com

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

The image is a perfect embellishment, and appropriately inappropriate. I hope you are ok with me adding this image to go along with your poem. It is a digital redoctoring of a banksy stencil I found.

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

The imagery of the first three lines makes me nauseous, but that doesn't make it untrue.

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

deep stuff

Re: Welcome to the Church of Consumer Jesus

Excellent poem.
